Engaging students in faculty-driven research projects promotes faculty research, scholarship, and creative activity. Students benefit from working with faculty-mentors to gain skills, apply classroom knowledge, and engage in professional development.

Fall 2024 Opportunities

Call for Faculty Proposals: Student Research Assistant Grant Program

Thanks to a generous donation from the Bill and Joanne Miller Charitable Trust, CI Student Research is pleased to announce funding for faculty to hire a student research assistant during the Fall 2024 semester.

The Student Research Assistant Grant program provides up to $2,400 to support one undergraduate student who is engaged in faculty-driven research or creative activities with a faculty mentor. The award pays undergraduate student research assistants $18.50 per hour over the course of the fall semester (up to a maximum of 130 hours for the fall semester).

The grant is intended to 1) provide faculty the benefit of student engagement in faculty-directed research or creative activities and, 2) provide undergraduate students the benefit of working closely with a faculty mentor.

The priority deadline to apply May 23, 2024 but we will continue to  accept applications until the end of the first week of fall semester (Friday, August 30, 2024).

Purpose: This award is intended to 1) provide faculty the benefit of student engagement in faculty-directed research or creative activities and, 2) provide undergraduate students the benefit of working closely with a faculty-mentor.

Faculty Eligibility: Tenure-track and lecturer faculty are eligible to apply for a grant.

Student Eligibility:  Undergraduate students are identified by faculty and should be selected by faculty prior to or during the first two weeks of the fall 2024 semester. Students must present evidence of work eligibility pursuant to the CSUCI student employement guidelines. Students should be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 units (those who have already graduated are not eligible). Students enrolled in UNIV 498 (or other classes related to the proposed research activity) are NOT eligible for this program. Students cannot receive academic credit for their participation in this program. Post-baccalaureate students are not elgible for this program.

Proposal Elements: Please prepare a brief proposal (1 to 2 pages, double-spaced) that addresses the following:

  • Title. What is the title of your project?
  • Explain your research project or creative activity. Briefly describe your proposed research/creative activity you plan to undertake during the fall 2024 semester. Make sure to cast your explanation in terms that can be understood by a non-specialist. What is the overall significance of your project? What are the methods of scholarly/creative inquiry you plan to employ?
  • How will students be incorporated into your research project? Please be specific about the tasks students will be assigned as part of your research. What insight into the research/creative process do you anticipate students will get from their participation? How will incorporating students into the research project contribute to your own research agenda?

Institutional Review Board Approval

Research involving human subjects must obtain IRB approval. If your project involves research on human subjects (including students in classes you teach), your proposal should be submitted to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and be reviewed before the start of work on your project. Conditions of Acceptance: If your project is accepted for inclusion, you will be required to:

  1. Have your student present at the 2025 CI Student Research Conference (May 3, 2025) OR another public venue outside of a class presentation.
  2. Engage in program evaluation as requested;
  3. File a brief report on their research/creative activities and mentorship experience.
